Smooth Finish

Basic Smooth Wall Finishes-(levels 3 and 4). These are standard interior wall finishes, wherein the seams and screws/nails are skimmed and sanded. All joints and interior angles will be taped, with the tape embedded in joint compound. Additional coats of joint compound will be applied. Fasteners are covered with two or more separate coats of joint compound. All joint compound will be smooth and free of ridges and tool marks, ready for priming. The main sections of wallboard will not be covered with compound.

Level 5 Smooth Wall Finish - Level 5 Finish refers to a high-end, labor intensive process, requiring multiple skim coats, carefully sanded in very strong lighting for an ultra-smooth, glass-like perfection of the final surface. When the use of high gloss paint, glazing, or lacquer finishes is planned or in certain lighting conditions such as side lighting from fixtures or windows, it is highly recommended to employ a Level 5 finish. This finish requires the highest degree of craftsmanship and very careful attention to detail.

Custom Hand Trowel and Knockdown Finishes

A wide variety of organic looking finishes are possible using hand tools to finish a sprayed, rolled, or hand-applied coat of joint compound. These textures add a rich, layered look to your interior spaces and express a warm, handmade aesthetic. Examples include:
  • Splatter Knockdown Texture—Splatter Knockdown texturing begins with applying a spray coating of finish compound on a prepared surface, which is allowed to set 10 to 15 minutes, then “knocked down with a trowel or knife to flatten the texture. This is very popular in many areas of the country, and produces a durable, interesting wall finish.
  • Orange Peel Texture—This is a finely textured, sprayed finish, with a low, slightly nubby surface. The effect can be difficult to achieve, but results in a subtle texture that breaks the interior lighting in a softer way than a flat finish would.
  • Rosebud Stomp Textures—Low relief, repeating circular Rosebud textures are created using a bristle brush on a very thinned out drywall mud mix.
  • Santa Fe Texture—A very popular, handcrafted finish. This is applied after the surface is first well prepared. A smooth layer is skim coated over the top, not completely covering the wall in all areas. The effect is of a subtle, smooth adobe style.
  • Skip Trowel Texture—this finish is hand applied, usually with a 24” knife or trowel. The finish compound is applied to spread thinly, skipping across the prepared wall surface.
  • Swirl and Combed Textures—Finish compound is applied, then hand tools are used to texture the surface in regular, geometric patterns. Many variations are possible.
Designer tip - use hand troweled surface finishes when renovating an older home; perfectly smooth new walls won't match the look of older trim, which may have many coats of paint and natural wear and tear.

Textured walls are a wonderful base for applying multi-toned glazes and color washes. The wallboard compound can be pre-tinted or left in its natural white color.
